Our Story...
What We Are:
The SILVER STATE KENNEL CLUB, Inc. is an open membership, all breed, obedience and agility club. We are a member of the
American Kennel Club. We are a non-profit corporation.
Who We Are:
The majority of our members reside in Southern Nevada. These people represent all walks of life, and their interest in
dogs ranges from interested pet owners, obedience and agility minded, breeders, exhibitors, professional handlers,
trainers and AKC licensed judges. Our common bond is a unanimous interest in purebred dogs.
Where We Are:
Please call 258-7752 for this information or visit our Web Site at www.SilverStateKennelClub.org.
What We Do:
SSKC is considered by many people to be one of the finest dog Clubs in the country. We conduct All Breed Dog Shows, Agility
and Obedience Trials in April. We also hold an AKC Sanctioned ALl Breed and Obedience Match in September.
Our monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. The meetings are geared to provide educational
as well as entertaining programs on all aspects of the world of purebred dogs. As an extension of our education program
we offer handling classes. Please call for location.
Each year an Annual Awards Presentation is held to honor the dogs that have earned titles and degrees during the year as
well as the breeders and Junior Handlers of the year.
How We Operate:
Silver State Kennel Club operates under a Constitution and by-laws approved by the American Kennel Club. Under these by-laws,
a Board of Directors consisting of nine people governs the Club. These are the President, Vice-President, Show Chairman,
Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer and 3 Directors, one of which is the out-going President.
The by-laws set forth Silver State's main objective: "... to unite dog fanciers interested in the welfare and betterment
of the dog... to assist members, through instruction and education, in bringing the natural qualities of their breed to
perfection... to conduct Dog Shows, Obedience and Agility Trials and Sanction Matches, under the rules of the American Kennel
Club."
How We Began:
Summer of 1954 SSKC ran an ad in the local paper announcing the formation of a dog club by Joe and Joan Cox. Twelve members were
present at the first meeting and dues were $5.00 per person. August 25, 1955 First recorded meeting held with minutes taken by
Ruth Anderson. November 6, 1955 First Fun Match held at City Park with 113 entries. February 1956 First AKC Sanction B Match held
at Cashman Field. May 1959 First AKC Sanction A Match held with all decorations in Marine Blue and Silver. Actor Preston
Foster awarded the Best in Match Trophy. October 15, 1961 First All Breed Show held under the direction of President Nila
Smith. Edgar Moss was the Superintendent and a German Shepard Dog owned by Mary Roberts won Best in Show and was awarded a
Paul Revere Bowl filled with 300 Silver Dollars.
This was our beginning. We have not tried to give a complete SSKC history up to the present. We have attempted to show, in
capsule form, something of the background and progress of our club and a glimpse of the long years of careful effort that
have gone into the making of the SILVER STATE KENNEL CLUB.
We Look Ahead:
SSKC today is on the alert for ways to better serve its members, to encourage and attract new dog fanciers, and to advance
the promotion and betterment of the world of dogs through education of both dog lovers and the general public. We believe that
in these ways we can help to stimulate attention to and interest in effective local, state, and national legislation and
programs for protection of dogs against curelty and theft, for better standards for hobby breeders and for improved
treatment and training of dogs.
In our club activities and at our shows and matches we look for new amd improved ideas to make for better understanding,
greater benefit and enjoyment to exhibitors, workers, and "ringside".
We'd Like to Have You:
SSKC invites you to become a member, to participate in our activities and to help us plan for the future.
